Overwhelmed...

"Hear my cry, O God; Attend to my prayer.  2 From the end of the earth I will cry
to You, When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I."
Psalm 61:1-2 NKJV

I know I am not the only person in the world who has felt overwhelmed.  In fact, I'd say we've all felt overwhelmed from time to time.  Some people handle it better than others.  Some people don't handle it at all.

David wrote Psalm 61:1-2 at a time when he was out of control.  He knew it and he could barely stand to talk about it.  Have you ever been there?  Boy, I have!  But I learned at times like that there are a couple of things we can do to help the feeling of being overwhelmed to go away.

"Hear my cry, O God; Attend to my prayer."
1.  We have to realize that you are not alone.  This problem that's overwhelming us isn't unique to us.  The Bible tells us that David was a man after God's own heart; yet according to what we read in many of the Psalms, we can see that he frequently felt anxious.  He certainly spoke often of fear and grief.

"2 From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I."
2.  When we feel overwhelmed, we need to cry out to the Lord.  But we don't just cry out.  We cry out to God!  He'll lead us to that higher plain.  He'll lead us to that place where we can rest in Him.  Resting in Him, truly resting in Him will help us to NOT feel so overwhelmed!

David knew where his help came from.  It came from God.  Even when he messed up, David knew God was his help.  I've been overwhelmed lately.  There has been a lot on my plate.  Between the health of my sweet mama, my hubby's health issues and my responsibilities as a wife and pastor I've been near the point of breaking.  But then I remembered these verses in Psalms.  "Hear my cry, O God; Attend to my prayer.  2 From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I."  Those words are so calming and helpful!  Yes, I may be overwhelmed, but I know where my help comes from.  Yes, I may be overwhelmed, but I know I am not alone and that God is always with me, never leaving me or forsaking me.  Yes, I may be overwhelmed, but I can cry out to the Lord and trust that He will lead me to the Rock that is higher than I am!!!

Are you overwhelmed today?  Remember you are not alone; remember that God is always with you!  Remember, you can go to God and He will lead you to Himself where you can rest and know He is in control!
